Substances nominated for the confidential portion of the NDSL [Non-domestic Substances List] and judged to be eligible for inclusion by the Department of the Environment are included in Appendix A, "Masked Names for Confidential Substance Identities", of the NDSL. While the masked names are similar to names used in the non-confidential portion of the List, the portion(s) of each name which, if specified, would directly or indirectly reveal the "confidential" nature of the substance, has been masked by the use of a generic term. Examples of such terms are: alkyl, heteropolycycle, substituted and derivative. Substances included in Appendix A are listed in ascending order of assigned Confidential Substance Identity Numbers. ... These numbers are generated by the Department of the Environment, not CAS, and are not included in the CAS Chemical Registry System.
