Record 1 2024-09-19

English

Subject field(s)
  • Hydrology and Hydrography
  • Oceanography
DEF

An area of the ocean floor where hydrogen sulfide, methane, and other hydrocarbon-rich fluid seepage occurs.

CONT

Cold seeps are places throughout the global ocean where chemicals like hydrogen sulfide, methane, and other hydrocarbon-rich fluids and/or gases escape from cracks or fissures in the ocean floor ... They are referred to as cold seeps to differentiate them from the super-heated fluids released from hydrothermal vents.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Hydrologie et hydrographie
  • Océanographie
CONT

Les suintements froids sont des sources de gaz, dont le méthane, ou d'hydrocarbures sous forme de fluides qui émanent des sédiments et forment des cratères sous-marins. Ces derniers se trouvent dans les «déserts» du fond océanique.

English

Subject field(s)
  • Hydrology and Hydrography
  • Geology
DEF

Spring which issues from a permeable medium over a relatively large area.

CONT

Seepage springs are formed when groundwater slowly seeps out of the ground. Seepage springs usually occur in sand, gravel, or organic materials and generally are found in depressions or valley bottoms. Seepage springs are different from artesian springs because they are not necessarily confined (contained below a dense layer of clay or other material) and usually have low flows.

OBS

seepage spring and filtration spring: These terms are used as synonyms, though some sources note that a seepage spring has a limited yield, while a filtration spring can be a spring with any amount of flow.

  • Geomorphology and Geomorphogeny
DEF

A belt on a slope, such as the bank of a stream, along which water emerges at atmospheric pressure and flows down the slope.

CONT

When pumping occurs from a well in an unconfined aquifer, a seepage face develops between the elevation where water table intercepts the well face and the water level in the well. The existence of a seepage face often leads to well yields which are less than values determined by conventional analysis.

Certain types of hot spring or steam vent have been described by Tonani as 'leakage manifestations' (Tonani, 1970). He suggested that water boiling at depth in a deep reservoir could pass up to the surface through a fault (often an active one) much as it would pass up a well. This water would flash into steam and may condense by cooling near the surface.
