Les swaps sur principal croissant en appellent à des parties impliquées dans un projet de construction ou d'investissement de grande envergure. Ce type d'activité est en général financé par des lignes de crédit sur lesquelles le constructeur ou l'investisseur tire les montants nécessaires à la réalisation du travail, au fur et à mesure de ses besoins. Les drawdown swaps prévoient dès l'origine du projet d'investissement quel sera l'échéancier des tirages de fonds nécessaires à l'accomplissement des travaux; ils organisent alors le swap en fonction de ce calendrier prédéterminé, où le principal augmente à chaque date de tirage.
