Record 1 2021-05-18

English

Subject field(s)
  • Human Diseases - Various
  • Respiratory System
CONT

Acute respiratory distress syndrome is a type of respiratory (lung) failure resulting from many different disorders that cause fluid to accumulate in the lungs and oxygen levels in the blood to be too low.

OBS

adult respiratory distress syndrome: Before 1992, the acronym ARDS represented the adult respiratory distress syndrome. The American-European Consensus Committee on ARDS standardized the definition... in 1994 and renamed it acute rather than adult respiratory distress syndrome because it occurs at all ages.

OBS

It has been described that ARDS can be caused by a pulmonary insult to the lungs (pulmonary or primary ARDS) or associated with a nonpulmonary insult (extrapulmonary or secondary ARDS).

OBS

ARDSPR: the abbreviation is written ARDS [subscript] PR.

OBS

It has been described that ARDS can be caused by a pulmonary insult to the lungs (pulmonary or primary ARDS) or associated with a nonpulmonary insult (extrapulmonary or secondary ARDS).

OBS

ARDSSEC: the abbreviation is written ARDS [subscript] SEC.

DEF

A syndrome of respiratory difficulty in newborn infants caused by a deficiency of a molecule called surfactant.

OBS

The mature lung contains a foamy fluid known as surfactant, a substance essential to expansion of the alveoli, or air sacs of the lungs. Because of their immaturity, premature babies tend to lack surfactant. Without surfactant, the lungs cannot inflate resulting in RDS [respiratory distress syndrome].

CONT
