Il peut s'agir de contrats négociés de gré à gré entre deux parties ou encore sur un marché organisé. L'accord bilatéral, conclu à une date donnée, n'est exécuté qu'à une date future fixée. Il oblige généralement l'une des parties à livrer le sous-jacent à cette date future, et l'autre partie à prendre livraison du même sous-jacent, aux conditions convenues.
