À l'origine, le Nouvel An tibétain tombait au moment du mûrissement ou de la moisson de l'orge. Ce ne fut qu'au XIIIe siècle, sous les Yuan, que le royaume de Sakya le fixa tel qu'il est actuellement avec un décalage allant de quelques jours à un mois par rapport au Nouvel An du calendrier lunaire. La célébration du Nouvel An tibétain peut varier d'une région à l'autre. Ainsi, dans la région de Gongbo dans la partie sud-est du Tibet, on le célèbre le 1er jour du 10e mois du calendrier tibétain actuel et dans la région agricole de l'ouest, le 1er jour du 12e mois.
