Ce ne fut qu'au XIIIe siècle, sous les Yuan, que le royaume de Sakya le fixa tel qu'il est actuellement avec un décalage allant de quelques jours à un mois par rapport au Nouvel An du calendrier lunaire. La célébration du Nouvel An tibétain peut varier d'une région à l'autre.
