La trompette piccolo est [...] la plus aiguë des trompettes actuelles. Comparée aux autres cuivres, elle est relativement récente : elle fut inventée en 1885 par le fabricant F. Besson pour une audition spéciale du Magnificat de Bach, dont la partie pour trompette est écrite dans une tonalité très aiguë. Sa sonorité chaude et souple domine le chœur et l'orchestre au complet.
