La tronçonneuse travaille généralement en bordure de route ou à une jetée. Son apparence est très variable, car s'il existe des modèles compacts et standard, il existe également des tronçonneuses énormes, construites pour répondre à des besoins précis, et qui comprennent un ou plusieurs dispositifs de tronçonnage auxquels vient se greffer un réseau plus ou moins complexe de plate-formes d'alimentation, de convoyeurs, d'éjecteurs, de dispositifs de triage, etc. (...) Suivant le châssis sur lequel elle est montée, la tronçonneuse sera désignée par l'un ou l'autre des termes suivants : tronçonneuse mobile (mobile slasher), tronçonneuse automotrice (self-propelled slasher, tronçonneuse remorquée (pulled or portable slasher) ou tronçonneuse stationnaire (stationary slasher).
