L'odontogenèse est un processus complexe : le bourgeon dentaire est formé par invagination de l'épithélium buccal, lui-même d'origine ectoblastique. C'est ce bourgeon dentaire qui va plus tard former l'émail. Il se transforme en cloche dentaire qui va coiffer la papille dentaire, issue du mésenchyme.
