En medio de los aproximadamente 17 principales aceites y grasas comercializados en el mundo, existen solo dos aceites láuricos, los que provienen del coco o coconut oil (CNO) y los que provienen de la semilla del fruto de la palma o palm kernel oil (PKO). Son denominados láuricos debido a que el ácido láurico es el mayor ácido graso en su composición, (hasta el 50% en algunos casos) mientras que ninguno de los otros principales aceites comerciales contiene más de un 1% de este ácido graso (la grasa de la manteca contiene un 3%).
