Le tensiomètre permet de mesurer la charge hydraulique du sol y. Il est constitué d'une bougie en céramique poreuse fixée à l'extrémité d'un tube, enfoncé dans le sol à la profondeur souhaitée. Si l'humidité du sol vient à baisser, l'eau diffuse à travers la bougie poreuse vers le milieu environnant : il se produit une dépression à l'intérieur du système mise en évidence par le manomètre. De même, lorsque le sol s'humidifie, la tension baisse. Lorsqu'il est saturé, elle est nulle. [...] Les tensiomètres sont des appareils simples, précis et très utilisés mais la gamme de potentiels qu'ils permettent de mesurer est limitée (ils ne fonctionnent plus à y > 0.09MPa).
