One of the four provinces to form the Canadian Confederation in 1867, the first in the order of precedence established according to the year of entry into Confederation and, if on the same year, according to the population of the entering provinces.

OBS

The name of a province and its form, spelling and abbreviation are to be decided by the provincial toponymy authority, with the agreement of the Government of Canada. One uses "province of Ontario" for the geographical entity, "Province of Ontario" for the provincial administration, "Ontario" as the short form, and "Ont." as the abbreviation.

Approved by ISO, the Canada Post two-character symbol is ON (or CA-ON). This symbol is the same in all languages and must be used only in postal addresses and statistical charts where the identification of provinces and territories is restricted to two characters. A two-character provincial symbol must not be used instead of the abbreviation in a text or on a geographical map, a poster or a road sign.

The territory covered by the province changed, from the original north side of the Great Lakes in 1867, to established boundaries in 1874 and a larger territory in 1889, to finally get to its actual size in 1912.
