Los CFC [clorofluorocarburos] y HCFC [hidroclorofluorocarburos] son compuestos derivados de los hidrocarburos (hydrocarbon en inglés) por sustitución de todos o algunos de sus átomos de hidrógeno con átomos de cloro y de flúor. Su nombre, lógicamente, debe reflejar esta sustitución. Los nombres de los compuestos orgánicos con átomos de cloro o de flúor incluyen el prefijo «cloro» o «fluoro». Luego clorofluorocarburo e hidroclorofluorocarburo son las mejores posibilidades.

El clorofluorocarburo, clorofluorocarbono o clorofluorocarbonados (denominados también CFC) es cada uno de los derivados de los hidrocarburos saturados obtenidos mediante la sustitución de átomos de hidrógeno por átomos de flúor y/o cloro principalmente. Debido a su alta estabilidad físico-química y su nula toxicidad han sido muy usados como líquidos refrigerantes, agentes extintores y propelentes para aerosoles. "We know the ozone itself is gone, but we know so little about what else is happening that everyone can speculate." Many of the speculations, including Farman's own, point to rising levels of man-made chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) as the culprit. Other explanations point to natural - as opposed to man-made - perturbations of the atmosphere as behind the seasonal changes.
