Les buts principaux de la CCI sont : renforcer l'unité entre les Inuits de la région circumpolaire; défendre les droits et les intérêts des Inuits à l'échelle internationale; élaborer et encourager des politiques à long terme visant à protéger l'environnement arctique; solliciter un partenariat complet et actif pour le développement politique, économique et social des régions circumpolaires, et obtenir la reconnaissance du droit des Inuits à l'autodétermination et de leur égalité en tant que peuple.

A territory created on April 1, 1999 from the division of the Northwest Territories, the eastern part of which became the third territory to join the Confederation of Canada. It stands thirteenth in the order of precedence established according to the year of entry into Confederation of the ten provinces, then of the territories. Nunavut consists of: (a) all of Canada north of the 60°N and east of a boundary line shown on the official map and which is not within Quebec or Newfoundland and Labrador; and (b) the islands in Hudson Bay, James Bay and Ungava Bay that are not within Manitoba, Ontario, or Quebec. (From a map of Geomatics Canada, Natural Resources Canada, 1999).

Although Nunavut has the status of a territory, its official designation is "Nunavut"; the term "territory" shall not be capitalized when used in a text in conjunction with Nunavut: "the territory of Nunavut is quite large".

Nun.: The official abbreviation of Nunavut will be approved by the territory's toponymy authority; the Translation Bureau recommends "Nun.", an abbreviation consistent with the rules of writing. But before the authority renders a decision, the name of the territory MUST NOT be abbreviated.

The Northwest Territories and Nunavut shared the two-letter code "NT" from April 1999 to August 2000. Since that latter date, the Canada Post symbols are: NT for the Northwest Territories and NU for Nunavut.

One should write "Nunavut" (without the definite article), or "the territory of Nunavut"; the word "territory" (always lowercased) is not part of the official designation. Another usage example: "the Government of Nunavut."
