The capital of the territory of Nunavut since its creation on April 1, 1999. It is located near the northeast head of Frobisher Bay on southern Baffin Island. Formerly called "Ikaluit," it was previously incorporated as the "town of Frobisher Bay" in 1980 and renamed "Iqaluit" on January 1, 1987.

A territory created on April 1, 1999 from the division of the Northwest Territories, the eastern part of which became the third territory to join the Confederation of Canada. It stands thirteenth in the order of precedence established according to the year of entry into Confederation of the ten provinces, then of the territories. Nunavut consists of: (a) all of Canada north of the 60°N and east of a boundary line shown on the official map and which is not within Quebec or Newfoundland and Labrador; and (b) the islands in Hudson Bay, James Bay and Ungava Bay that are not within Manitoba, Ontario, or Quebec. Although Nunavut has the status of a territory, its official designation is "Nunavut"; the term "territory" shall not be capitalized when used in a text in conjunction with Nunavut: "the territory of Nunavut is quite large".

Nun.: The official abbreviation of Nunavut will be approved by the territory's toponymy authority; the Translation Bureau recommends "Nun.", an abbreviation consistent with the rules of writing. But before the authority renders a decision, the name of the territory MUST NOT be abbreviated.

The Northwest Territories and Nunavut shared the two-letter code "NT" from April 1999 to August 2000. Since that latter date, the Canada Post symbols are: NT for the Northwest Territories and NU for Nunavut.

One should write "Nunavut" (without the definite article), or "the territory of Nunavut"; the word "territory" (always lowercased) is not part of the official designation. Another usage example: "the Government of Nunavut."

AVOID: Nunavut Territory. Distinguish from "Yukon Territory", the name of the Yukon from 1898 to March 27, 2002, the term "Territory" being uppercased because it is part of the official designation.

Il est treizième dans l'ordre de préséance établi selon l'année d'entrée dans la Confédération des dix provinces, puis des territoires. NU : Les Territoires du Nord-Ouest et le Nunavut se sont partagé l'indicatif à deux lettres «NT» jusqu'en août 2000. Depuis cette date, les indicatifs de Postes Canada sont : NT pour les Territoires du Nord-Ouest et NU pour le Nunavut.
