Le climat régional dépend de la situation géographique (latitude, longitude et altitude) et de la configuration régionale du relief. Le microclimat, quant à lui, est déterminé par la configuration du relief local, lui-même fortement tributaire du relief régional. Donc le climat régional n'est pas la somme des microclimats puisqu'il est déterminé par des conditions climatiques et topographiques supérieures à celles qui le modifient en microclimats.

On parle de climat régional ou macroclimat lorsque le secteur considéré est plus ou moins vaste (côte méditerranéenne). Trois macroclimats entrent en compte pour le domaine viticole français : ils sont appelés méditerranéen, océanique et continental.

La majorité des auteurs utilise en synonyme «climat régional» et «macroclimat»; cependant contrairement au terme «climat régional», le terme «macroclimat» désigne aussi le «climat du globe terrestre».
