A portal that targets a niche audience.

... general portals like Yahoo and Altavista could not keep up with the need for more in-depth content, local interests and the needs of various kinds of Web surfers, and hence the birth of specialised Websites offering focussed content (called "vertical portals" or "vortals") became inevitable.

Like the portal, the vertical portal directs Internet surfers to other sites or a search engine. However, it develops vertical subjects and focuses on a single theme.
