At the start of each parliamentary session, a senator is nominated by a selection committee to assume the role of Speaker pro tempore, or acting Speaker. The nomination is then confirmed through a vote in the Senate. The Speaker pro tempore serves whenever the Speaker is unable to attend a sitting of the Senate.

Au début de chaque session, un sénateur est nommé par un comité de sélection pour assumer la charge de Président intérimaire. Cette nomination est confirmée par un vote au Sénat. Le Président intérimaire occupe le fauteuil chaque fois que le Président ne peut être présent.

Bien que l'usage français préconise l'emploi de la minuscule pour les titres de poste, la majuscule à Président et à Présidente est obligatoire dans les documents concernant les délibérations de la Chambre des communes et du Sénat, car elle permet de faire la distinction entre le Président de chacune de ces chambres et les présidents des comités.

In the House of Commons, a Member, other than the Deputy Speaker, who is called upon to take the Chair during the unavoidable absence of the Speaker. In the Senate, a Senator chosen by the Senate to preside as Speaker until the Speaker or the Speaker pro tempore resumes the chair.
