The applied title is the name by which the department is publicly identified. It is concise and descriptive of the department’s function or responsibility, and is used in the departmental signature and in all communications activities.

[A federal department's] "applied title" is not to be confused with a department’s legal title. Legal titles are established through enabling legislation or by order-in-council and are used where required by law, such as in the terms of a contract.

The Canada Child Tax Benefit is composed of a base benefit that about 80% of Canadian families receive and a supplement called the National Child Benefit (NCB) Supplement that is targeted to low-income families. The Supplement is treated differently in each province/territory. Most provinces and territories clawback the NCB Supplement from families on social assistance so that they receive no net benefit from the federal program.
