Record number: 4, Textual support number: 1 DEF
Tenth and last province to enter the Canadian Confederation on March 23, 1949; its territory comprises an insular portion, the Island of Newfoundland, and a continental one, Labrador, attached to the province of Quebec. With the royal assent of December 6, 2001, officially amending the Constitution of Canada and making effective the law previously adopted by the House of Commons, the name of the province was changed from "Newfoundland" (abbreviation: "Nfld.") to "Newfoundland and Labrador" (abbreviation: "N.L."), thus approving the name and abbreviation determined by the provincial Cabinet. 3, record 4, English, - Newfoundland%20and%20Labrador
Record number: 4, Textual support number: 1 OBS
The name of a province and its form, spelling and abbreviation are to be decided by the provincial toponymy authority, with the agreement of the Government of Canada. One uses "province of Newfoundland and Labrador" for the geographical entity, "Province of Newfoundland and Labrador" for the provincial administration, "Newfoundland and Labrador" as the short form, and "N.L." as the abbreviation. Note the absence of hyphenation and the abbreviation without a space between the two elements abbreviated by their initial letter with a period, as the rule requires in English. When used alone, "Labrador" is abbreviated by "Lab.". The new designation "Newfoundland and Labrador" remains singular because the entity is still a unit. 3, record 4, English, - Newfoundland%20and%20Labrador
Record number: 4, Textual support number: 2 OBS
Approved by ISO, the Canada Post two-character symbol changed from NF (or CA-NF) to NL (or CA-NL) on October 21, 2002. This symbol is the same in all languages and must be used only in postal addresses and statistical charts where the identification of provinces and territories is restricted to two characters. A two-character provincial symbol must not be used instead of the abbreviation in a text or on a geographical map, a poster or a road sign. Do not confuse the country subdivision code or symbol NL (or CA-NL) representing Newfoundland and Labrador, with the country code or symbol NL representing the Netherlands. 3, record 4, English, - Newfoundland%20and%20Labrador

Record number: 4, Textual support number: 1 DEF
3, record 4, French, - Terre%2DNeuve%2Det%2DLabrador
Record number: 4, Textual support number: 1 OBS
3, record 4, French, - Terre%2DNeuve%2Det%2DLabrador
Record number: 4, Textual support number: 2 OBS

2, record 4, Spanish, - Terranova%20y%20Labrador
