Marker-assisted selection (MAS) is a tool for crop improvement where an associated marker is used for indirect selection of a trait. Depuis une dizaine d'années, l'utilisation chez les plantes pérennes des outils moléculaires développés chez les plantes annuelles, en particulier des marqueurs facilement transférables et utilisables en routine comme les microsatellites, la cartographie génétique et les techniques d'analyse des caractères quantitatifs, a permis d'envisager une nouvelle approche, la sélection assistée par marqueurs ou SAM.
