La force dépend du coefficient de portance, déterminé par la forme de l'aile et par l'angle d'attaque : sa valeur typique est de l'ordre de 0,3. Lorsque l'on augmente la vitesse de l'avion, la portance totale augmente. Sans action sur l'inclinaison ou la forme de l'aile, qui modifie le coefficient de portance, l'avion monterait.
