La capa de agua superficial que tiene suficiente luz para la fotosíntesis se llama "zona eufótica", y allí donde el agua es muy limpia y transparente puede alcanzar desde la superficie hasta los 100 - 130 metros de profundidad. La zona de penumbra es la zona oligofótica, y por debajo y hasta el fondo se encuentra la zona afótica, en la que no hay luz de origen solar.
