The United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF), originally known as the United Nations International Children's Emergency Fund, was created by the United Nations General Assembly on 11 December 1946, to provide emergency food and healthcare to children and mothers in countries that had been devastated by World War II.

In 1950, UNICEF's mandate was extended to address the long-term needs of children and women in developing countries everywhere. In 1953 it became a permanent part of the United Nations System, and the words "international" and "emergency" were dropped from the organization's name, though it retained the original acronym, "UNICEF".

L'UNICEF a été créé par l'Assemblée générale des Nations Unies le 11 décembre 1946 à titre d'organisme temporaire sous le nom de «Fonds international des Nations Unies pour le secours de l'enfance» afin de venir en aide aux enfants des pays européens dévastés par la Deuxième Guerre mondiale. En 1953, l'UNICEF est devenu un organisme permanent des Nations Unies destiné à améliorer les conditions de vie des enfants en Asie, en Afrique, au Moyen-Orient et en Amérique latine. Son nom a alors été changé pour «Fonds des Nations Unies pour l'enfance», mais l'acronyme «UNICEF» a été conservé.

La mission de l'UNICEF auprès des enfants dans le monde entier n'est pas qu'une assertion morale; elle est codifiée dans la Convention relative aux droits de l'enfant des Nations Unies, le traité des droits de l'homme le plus largement ratifié à l'échelle mondiale, adoptée par 193 pays, y compris le Canada.

Fue creado en 1946, para brindar ayuda urgente a los niños y niñas víctimas de las guerras.

Fondo de las Naciones Unidas para la Infancia; UNICEF; Unicef: La Fundación del Español Urgente (Fundéu BBVA), con el asesoramiento de la Real Academia Española, indica que el acrónimo del "Fondo de las Naciones Unidas para la Infancia", formado a partir del nombre inglés "United Nations Children's Fund", puede escribirse enteramente con mayúsculas ("UNICEF") o solo con mayúscula inicial ("Unicef").
