Vers la fin des années 1800, en raison de la chasse à outrance, le nombre de baleines noires était extrêmement faible. Malgré la protection internationale des baleines noires, déclarée en 1937, interdisant la chasse commerciale de ce mammifère marin, la population ne s'est pas rétablie.
