La mesure du débit d’équivalent de dose ambiant consiste à détecter les rayonnements ionisants ambiants qu’ils soient d’origine naturelle (activité cosmique et tellurique) ou artificielle (industrie nucléaire, transports radioactifs...). En condition normale, la mesure de la part artificielle est tout à fait négligeable. L’objectif de la mesure continue est de prévenir toute évolution du niveau d’irradiation, qui trahirait une défaillance de l’installation nucléaire.
