Économie dans laquelle de nombreux petits producteurs indépendants se font concurrence dans chaque secteur. Dans un secteur atomistique, les modèles théoriques de la concurrence pure sont à peu près valables. Les vendeurs ont chacun une dimension si modeste qu'ils acceptent plus ou moins que le prix de vente de leurs produits soit plus ou moins imposé et ils ajustent leur production en fonction de ce prix du marché. Dans un secteur atomistique, aucun vendeur (ou aucun acheteur), agissant indépendamment, ne peut influer de façon perceptible sur le prix, et le grand nombre des firmes écarte la possibilité d'une collusion pour limiter la production.
