Les scientifiques utilisent l'effectif par classe d'âge afin de déterminer le nombre de poissons présents dans le stock au début de l'année étudiée et de réactualiser les résultats des années précédentes. Les résultats pour les classes d'âges les plus anciennes sont donc très fiables puisqu'ils sont recalculés tous les ans avec les nouvelles données de captures. Ils le sont moins avec les classes d'âge les plus récentes.
