Generalmente se define la calidad de un mortero expresando el peso de la cal o del cemento que se mezcla con un metro cúbico de arena seca. Dicha proporción suele ser de 350 a 450 kg en los morteros ordinarios, que se califican de magros o grasos según tengan menos o más cal o cemento.
