[…] l’interrogation par neutrons thermiques affecte essentiellement les éléments fissiles et l’interrogation par des neutrons rapides concerne les éléments fertiles et fissiles. Ainsi, la mesure du signal prompt concerne les éléments fissiles et le signal retardé concerne les éléments fissiles et fertiles. Moyennant un spectre neutronique interrogateur approprié (rapide et thermique) et en utilisant des hypothèses sur certains radioéléments, il devient alors possible de quantifier séparément les éléments fissiles (235U, [exposants 239,241]Pu) et fertiles (essentiellement238U).
