Louis Comfort Tiffany, d'abord tenté par le vitrail, entreprit ensuite la fabrication d'un verre souple et richement irisé, le Favrile Glass obtenu en soumettant le verre à l'action de produits chimiques et en le baignant dans des vapeurs de métaux en fusion pendant le soufflage. Le verre, parcouru de longues traînées métalliques, prenait généralement des formes simples, parfois étranges.
