The Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) is an ambitious effort to improve regional cooperation and connectivity on a trans-continental scale. The initiative aims to strengthen infrastructure, trade, and investment links between China and some 65 other countries that account collectively for over 30 percent of global GDP [gross domestic product], 62 percent of population, and 75 percent of known energy reserves.

L'initiative La Ceinture et la Route a été inaugurée par Xi Jinping en 2013 et comprenait initialement six corridors commerciaux terrestres et maritimes reliant l'Asie et l'Europe à la Chine. En 2017, l'initiative a été étendue au monde entier. Dans le cadre de l'initiative, la Chine s'est engagée à investir environ un billion de dollars dans l'infrastructure mondiale pour construire les ports, les autoroutes, les voies ferrées et l'infrastructure énergétique nécessaires pour que le monde soit relié à la Chine.

En étendant son influence économique dans le monde à travers son initiative «la Ceinture et la Route» (Belt and Road Initiative, BRI [...]), la Chine vise aussi à démontrer son leadership en matière de développement durable.
