Environ 100 espèces communes dans les régions tempérées. Des quelques 43 espèces de l'Amérique du Nord, 17 sont introduites d'Europe, et quelques unes (Bromus rubeus, Bromus hordeacens, Bromus villosus, Bromus tectorum etc.) sont devenues sur la côte du Pacifique, de véritable fléaux. Le nom générique signifie : nourriture; allusion au bon fourrage que donnent ces plantes.
