Nickname given to scatterable anti-personnel mines used by Soviet forces in Afghanistan; the PFM-1 "butterfly" mines, millions of which were delivered from helicopters and fixed-wing aircraft employ a binary liquid explosive charge detonated by accumulative pressure; after an estimated three months, the liquid charge deteriorates and the device becomes inactive; they gained notoriety because they attracted children who mistook them for toys.
