Porous rock formations that hold or (as in the case of depleted oil and gas reservoirs) have previously held fluids, such as natural gas, oil or brines, are potential candidates for CO2 storage.

Not to be confused with "carbon storage" which refers to the long term sequestration of all forms of carbon in forests, soils, oceans as well as in geological formations.
