Lorsque, dans un système de chauffage à eau chaude, la [chaudière] est au niveau du soubassement ou rez-de-chaussée - ou à quelques pouces plus bas il y a un grand avantage à employer un système de distribution combiné, c'est-à-dire avec distribution par le sommet (down feed) pour l'étage du bas et distribution inférieure (up feed) pour les étages du haut. Tout en réduisant le volume d'eau au sommet du système, ce mode d'installation permet de diminuer sensiblement la hauteur de la colonne et des montées.
