Un niveau de compétence est la description de la compétence langagière d'une personne, à l'oral ou à l'écrit, à un moment donné de son apprentissage. Le système des Canadian Language Benchmarks comprend 12 niveaux de compétence répartis en 3 stades de certification : débutant (niveaux 1 à 4), intermédiaire (niveaux 5 à 8) et avancé (niveaux 9 à 12).
