Most of the sediments and their metamorphosed equivalents within the western part of Quetico Belt have at one time or another been referred to as Couchiching, a name applied by A.C. Lawson in 1888 to metamorphosed sediments that occur below the Keewatin lavas in the Rainy Lake area.
