Une caractéristique du taux d'humidité des matériaux morts est qu'il tend constamment vers un état d'équilibre avec l'humidité relative de l'air qui l'enveloppe, et que toutes les variations subies par ce dernier se trouvent par conséquent répercutées au sein du combustible.
