PROLOG es un lenguaje descriptivo. Al contrario que otros lenguajes procedimentales o "imperativos" más extendidos (como BASIC o PASCAL), que obligan al programador a definir cada paso en el proceso de datos, en PROLOG es suficiente -pero sólo en principio- describir el espacio problema (por ejemplo, listar todos los datos y reglas conocidas) y formular una declaración ("goal") seleccionada para ser válida en ese espacio problema.
