Le décanteur est constitué par un bassin à fond plat, muni à sa base d'une série de tuyaux perforés permettant d'introduire l'eau brute uniformément sur toute la surface du décanteur. A la partie supérieure est disposé un réseau de goulottes de reprise ou de tuyaux perforés de façon à recueillir régulièrement l'eau décantée sur toute la surface.
