Afin d'éviter des fraudes aux différents stades de la distribution, les essences sans plomb sont teintées en vert par adjonction de deux colorants : - l'un bleu [1,4-bis-(butylaminol)-9,10 anthraquinone]; - l'autre jaune [4-(diéthylamino)azobenzène]. Le carburant de distillat moyen non taxé est coloré (rouge) et sert à des usages non assujettis à la taxe (par exemple, le chauffage, la cuisson des aliments, la production d'énergie dans du matériel non immatriculé employé à des fins commerciales, industrielles ou institutionnelles).
