Il y a deux genres de pénétromètres qui se différencient par le mode d'enfoncement: le pénétromètre dynamique et le pénétromètre statique.

CONT

Le pénétromètre dynamique est utilisé pour reconnaître rapidement un sol. On exécute d'abord un forage de reconnaissance qui permet d'étalonner les essais au pénétromètre; puis, tout alentour et dans une zone suffisamment étendue, on procède à des mesures au pénétromètre. On détermine ainsi les variations de profondeur des différentes couches de terrain, et surtout on reconnait la position d'une couche dure éventuelle.
