Every year, there are thousands of spills involving oil or other hazardous substances that threaten the valuable and delicate coastal zone resources of Atlantic Canada. It is essential to have information on hand to make quick, informed decisions to enable an effective response to protect these resources and the natural environment. In order to minimize the environmental impacts of such incidents, the Environmental Emergencies Section of Environment Canada in the Atlantic region, through the Environmental Emergencies Mapping Program, has developed a geographic information system (GIS) incorporating the most comprehensive and up-to-date environmental data currently available.

On assiste chaque année à des milliers de déversements d'hydrocarbures et d'autres substances dangereuses qui menacent les ressources précieuses et vulnérables des côtes du Canada atlantique. Il est essentiel d'avoir toute l'information nécessaire à porté de la main pour prendre des décisions rapides et éclairées, et intervenir de façon efficace afin de protéger ces ressources et le milieu naturel. A dessein de minimiser les impacts environnementaux de tels incidents, la Section des urgences environnementales d'Environnement Canada dans la région de l'Atlantique, par l'intermédiaire du Programme de cartographie des urgences environnementales, a établit un système d'information géographique (SIG) regroupant les données les plus complètes et les plus récentes actuellement disponibles.
