Tornado already offers the flareless, aimed touchdown followed by reverse thrust which the Viggen pioneered as a means of short-field operation. Any future fighter will equal or better this performance. Extendable nosewheel legs and 2-D nozzles can help rotate early on take-off.

On pourrait (...) avoir recours à des fusées d'appoint permettant à l'appareil [le nouveau chasseur allemand] de s'envoler directement en jaillissant de son abri; un train avant à jambe extensible et des tuyères bidimensionnelles contribueraient à lui donner la capacité de déjauger très vite au décollage. Il faudrait en outre qu'il soit apte à se poser sur de courtes distances, c'est-à-dire à effectuer des atterrissages sans arrondi suivis d'une inversion de la poussée, égalant ou même surclassant à cet égard le Viggen ou le Tornado.
