GROUND PRESSURE [1 record]

Record 1 2007-09-17

English

Subject field(s)
  • Geophysics
DEF

The vertical pressure at a point in the Earth's crust, equal to the pressure caused by the weight of a column of the overlying rock or soil.

CONT

When increasing fluid pressures exceeded lithostatic pressures and the tensile strength of the overlying rocks, fracturing of these rocks occurred, permitting rapid escape of hydrothermal fluids into newly created open space.

OBS

It is possible that the fluid pression at depth tends to approach the so-called lithostatic pressure.

OBS

geostatic pressure; lithostatic pressure; overburden pressure; ground pressure; overburden stress; rock pressure: terms used at Natural Resources Canada - Earth Sciences Sector.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Géophysique
DEF
