Sauf pour quelques appareils de recherche, le four des chromatographes (ou l'enceinte à température contrôlée des colonnes) est à bain d'air, pourvu de résistances chauffantes et d'un système de ventilation et de brassage pour l'homogénéisation de la température. La régulation de cette dernière est assurée à l'aide d'un régulateur électronique, par l'intermédiaire d'un couple thermoélectrique, ou d'une sonde équivalente, autour duquel la variation n'excède pas [plus ou moins] 0,2°C, pour un intervalle de fonctionnement allant de la température ambiante jusqu'à 400 °C. En fait, ce système n'empêche pas le développement d'un gradient thermique dans le four, qui peut être de quelques degrés vers 250 °C.
