Anciennement, «promontoire» et «cap» étaient synonymes. Dans une acceptation plus restrictive, ce générique indique une masse de terre élevée ou une montagne formant saillie au-dessus des eaux, par opposition au cap qui désigne tout ce qui s'avance dans une étendue d'eau, élevé ou non. Le promontoire est habituellement plus gros que le cap.
