La technologie des réseaux multicolores permet déjà en laboratoire, de transmettre une dizaine de longueurs d'onde (correspondant chacune à une couleur) et donc de faire passer une dizaine de canaux sur une même fibre. Cette technique de multiplexage en longueur d'onde ouvre la voie à la transmission de centaines, voire de milliers de canaux.
