Le chauffage de puits est la technique de stimulation thermique la plus simple et probablement l'une des plus anciennement utilisées. L'énergie calorifique est apportée à la formation par un brûleur ou un dispositif de chauffage électrique (puissance: 10 à 40 kW). La production étant arrêtée, les abords du puits sont élevés à une température supérieure à celle du gisement, sans excéder toutefois un niveau thermique d'environ 250 °C. La durée de la période de chauffage est de quelques heures à quelques jours. Pendant la période de production du puits, par pompage, les abords du puits se refroidissent (production d'huile chaude et fuites thermiques).
